It’s my birthday today, so I decided I’d share the 3 new habits I’ve adopted over the last year, that have helped me grow as a person.
When I realized that my 27th birthday was days ahead, it kinda made me think. I am proud to say that I’m, to this day, young at heart, maybe older at spirit, and get asked for an ID in night clubs still. However, that doesn’t change the fact that I’m not in my early 20s anymore. While I understand why some might feel like that downright sucks on their birthday, I mean none of us is getting any younger, I think that there is a fun and exciting way to look at this. First, the fun part. Leveling up, hello?! It’s a game, and one where you’re only going up! And second, the exciting part. I started reflecting upon all the things that happened last year and started actually noticing all those little and some bigger accomplishments that I’ve made. Once I’ve realized how all of that is actually getting me closer to becoming all the better person & achieving my goals, I couldn’t feel anything but enraptured.

3 Unexpected New Habits I’ve Adopted Last Year that have helped me grow as a person.
1. Expressing gratitude – It’s incredibly easy to notice the shit (not at all in a good way) around you. I was doing that for so long, I can’t even remember. That, of course, was fueling me with such a negative energy, I can’t even begin to describe you. And, to be honest, I don’t want to, ’cause nothing good has or will come out of it. Realizing that focusing on dumb shit simply isn’t working out well for me is probably one of the best things that have ever happened to me.
So, instead of doing that, I’ve simply started noticing the things that I have and am surrounded by that are actually pretty damn awesome. Everyone I love and care about is alive and well; I am alive and healthy and great. There is a roof above my head, food, clean water to drink, to shower. I finally work on something that I love. I have a dog!!! ALL IS GREAT! And I couldn’t be more thankful for that. Thinking about all of these things on a daily basis takes a second, oh but it goes such a long way. And I’m not saying that the things that sucked before, all of a sudden, just stopped sucking. They still suck, but only for those who care, and I don’t. And neither should you.
2. Give Myself a Break – I am a perfectionist by nature, and kinda that person who wants to finish a shit ton of tasks in a day. Plus, an over-thinker. So, yeah, not easy. I’m keen to becoming an annoying little pain in the ass at some point(s) during the day. I am always hard on myself, whether it’s about something that I didn’t do right, or just didn’t do. Or, or, something I’ve said. Gazillion years ago. And, I always think that I could’ve done things better. No matter how good they actually are. Yet, I’m quite the understanding and kind go-to person when it comes to other people.
For a change, I’ve decided to give myself a break every once in a while. We all make mistakes, but it’s okay as long as we always find something to learn from them. And, what’s perfect anyway? So, I’m gonna cut me some slack. And some slice, it’s my birthday I’m gonna have my cake and eat it too.
3. Less Complaining, More Action – Like for example, I was always saying how I would love to start cooking more serious dishes and stuff. And I would always find something that’s close enough to a reason not to. I don’t like the kitchen. Oh, look, now I don’t have the time. This oven’s broken, and it’s too complicated for me to go down and use that one… Jeez, if you’re gonna cry about it! So, now, I started simply doing the things I say I’d love to. I hang out in the kitchen a lot. Doing mess. Still, trying. I wake up lot more earlier than I used to. I’m growing, man!
How have you grown from your last birthday? Share your awesome habits, new or old, in the comments. I would love to read about it.
And, also, some of my favorite artist aka celebrities are born in January, like David Bowie, Betty White, Zooey Deschanel, Sade, Ellen, Christian Bale… so, it’s a pretty damn great month.
