I’m sharing some of the super simple steps I’m taking towards better self-care, and how can you embrace them in your everyday life too!
Self-care is not something that I was focused on or, tbh, understood to begin with, in the past. At least not how frigging important it is. The only “self-care” rituals and routines I knew & embraced in my early 20s were: hanging out with my friends every day, talk about stuff, laugh about stuff, drink and just have fun; not leaving the bed + binge-watch an entire season in one day, or more seasons in 2 days at least once a week, if not more. And it sometimes was a TV Show that I didn’t even like that much! But hey, we’re young, we have all the time in the world, we’re probably even immortal or some shit haha.
I didn’t care when I was going to bed (usually in the am, and waking up well in the pm), how do I start my mornings, didn’t care what & when I eat, am I exercising, neither physical nor mental. I mean, I knew that I was doing things wrong, eating mayo every day can’t be good haha. But, I just didn’t care and my 20-year-old body didn’t mind that hard. Now, I’m not saying that I’m old or anything, it’s just all of a sudden shit’s all about getting a good night’s sleep, being kind to my mind, body scrubs, daydreams and embracing new and better habits. All of a sudden it’s all about taking some darn good self-care, simple as that.
Since I’ve become more and more focused on taking good care of myself each and every day, and have seen the perks of it all, I thought I’d share how I’m doing that and how can you do the same too. There are so many simple things you can do for yourself every day, that don’t even take that much time or energy but will make you feel just amazing. You might be doing some of these even, without any strategic planning or anything. So even acknowledging that you’re doing good things for yourself, can have a positive impact on how you feel.
So, below are some of the self-care rituals I’ve embraced, some that I’m still learning to, how are they helping me, and the most important part, how can they help you too look and feel better! If you don’t have a cup of coffee in your hand, then this is the time to make yourself one, cause issa loong ride haha. But, seriously tho, it’s a longer read #youvebeenwarned
And please, please don’t think that I’m nailing all of these haha. Do not in any way think so and feel discouraged to lean towards more acts of self-care on the daily (if you aren’t doing that already). This is all pretty new for me too, some things I’ve been doing for a while and they’ve turned into habits, others are barely steps, but I’m taking them. And if I can encourage you to do so yourself, then I’ll consider this post a job well done. 🙂
SUPER SIMPLE ACTS OF SELF-CARE TO EASILY EMBRACE TODAY
1. Good Night’s Sleep
I used to be a night owl for so long, it took me years to come back again to the light(er) side haha. But, I’ve realized that in order to stay productive, inspired, to get stuff done, I need my good night’s sleep. This was probably the hardest thing for me to shift. And actually it’s still pretty fucking challenging for me tbph. Like, I’d say “okay, I’m going to bed early tonight for sure!” and then around 9.30 I’m like “okay, just one more project”… And then after an hour and a half, I’m like “uh uh I need to write this, or read this, or make this, or whatever”. Before I know it, it’s 2 am & I no longer even feel the need to sleep.
At other times, there are events or dates most of which last well into the night, so… And so then the next day I’ll sleep a little in (a little as in “I’m trying to not make myself look that bad” haha), and even though I’ve slept 8 hours at the very least, I’d feel more tired and burnout than had I woken up in 5 am! Now I’m giving a maximum effort to go to bed earlier (I think like by 11 each night would be best, and also – consistency is key they say), so that I can wake up the next morning real early & feeling fresh (meeh, you know ahah) and ready to tackle shit.
I definitely haven’t turned this into a consistent habit haha. Even when I “turn down for bed” in the same time for several nights in a row (and it hardly ever is before 12am) I would still break the momentum, if there was any in such a short time, and I’m back where I started. But, BUT! I’m not giving up, y’all!
2. Water Water Water
This is definitely my forte here, I’m winning this okay haha. My mom instilled this habit of drinking water first thing in the morning when I was a kid, and a lot more throughout the day, so I now don’t have that challenge with drinking enough water per day. But what I do know, as someone who drinks at least 3 liters a day almost her whole life, is my body notices pretty damn fast when I haven’t had even like a glass in a while. My mouth gets dry super fast, and there are times even when I’d start feeling a little sick if more time passes. Weirdly enough, this happens mostly when I’d apply foundation on my lips, it kinda gets my whole mouth drier much much faster. Or just my body is rejecting make up I don’t know haha.
So, if you are someone who doesn’t really drink that much or not nearly enough water, then by all means, please, try a little harder. There are apps that can remind you, there even is a wallpaper you can put on your phone that will remind you on my Instagram Story Highlights (you’re welcome haha), maybe getting a nice water bottle and carrying it around with you will help (or you can DIY some water bottles)… Just make sure that you drink at least 2.5 liters a day.
I’m definitely not a fan of exercising. I mean, I know people that actually love working out, running or whatever, not me tho. And since it’s no fun for me, it’s kinda natural that I’ll find all the excuses in the world not to do it haha. Right, is it just me? But, but! I’ve realized that going without any exercise in a longer period of time has a pretty frigging bad impact on my body and health #nobrainer, right? My back hurts constantly, and when it does, I can’t move or stand straight… I’m tired all the time, and I’ve pretty much been feeling like a granny, and that’s enough!
I made better self-care, including exercising one of my 2019 goals, and I’m pretty fucking proud to say that I’ve been working out with such a commitment, I’m really surprised of myself tbh haha. So, if you’re struggling with sticking to your working out routine, here’s what I did, it might work for you too. First, seeing as I’m not a fan of exercising, I wanted to sorta ease into this. I made like a compromise with myself, let’s call it that. I realize that working out is super important for a person’s overall health and well-being, so I’m gonna do it. But, I’m gonna do it my way haha.
One hour workout really sounds like an eternity for someone that doesn’t enjoy it, and actually, I’m a little pissed just by saying it haha. And I just don’t feel like committing to going to the gym or to pilates or anything like that right now. So, instead of working out for a longer period of time (say, 1 hour), every other day in a gym, I decided to start with 20 to 30 minutes workouts every day (except when I really really can’t). Instead of putting additional pressure on myself, I just decided to start moving every day! Baby steps.
And the results of this? Well, it’s only been like a little more than a month, but! First, I’ve actually been working out every day (with very few exceptions, and with actual legit reasons). Second, I made sure I always exercise at least 20 minutes, but I almost always kept it going for more, coming to around 40 minutes pretty often. Score amirit? And finally, and I think this is actually the most important of them all – I actually am beginning to feel excited about working out whaaat??? It’s not something that’s a total dread, but more like something that’s maybe fuuun?
So, just start. And do it for yourself!
4. Good Food
Don’t know about you, but this is another thing I need to work on more! I’m definitely eating much better now than I was when I was younger. But there is still a lot of space for improvement here. I need to work on eating more fruits and veggies on the daily, dial down on sweets and flips (guilty pleasures). What’s good tho is that now I’m aware that I’m cutting down on those things because they don’t contribute positively to my body, energy and overall health. It certainly is encouraging to know that you’re doing it for the good of yourself, right? She said that as she was finishing another chocolate bar in the blink of an eye haha.
All jokes aside tho, since I’m now fully focused on making working out a long-lasting habit, I’m letting my sweet guilty pleasures slide. In the meantime I’m mentally preparing myself that soon (-er rather than later), I’m gonna stop eating 100 gr of chocolate and half a bag of flips in 20 minutes (almost every damn day). I don’t have intentions to cut sugar or junk food off the list entirely for sure, but I definitely want to dial that shit down to a minimum. Moderation, right?
5. Listen to Your Body and Soul
This may sound a little weird or whatever, but it’s actually essential. Your body and your mind are constantly telling you what it is they need from you. Like, your head hurts, maybe you didn’t drink enough water, or should maybe try to stress a little less over things (like my girl Marie Forleo says “It’s all figure-outable!”). Go gentle on yourself, if you are tired – rest. If you need a day off – take a day off (if that’s an option, if not then try to do as much of what feels right for you and your body as you can in your personal time). Again, our bodies have their ways of telling us what to do, we just need to listen carefully and cooperate.
6. Treat Yourself Good.
Do things that make you feel great and do them all the time. Like promise yourself a face mask, or a body scrub at least once a week. Or bubble baths. Or just a glass of wine and your favorite book. Whatever’s giving you the good feels, do that often!
If you wanna try DIYing some skincare related projects I have some for you: 1) DIY Argan Oil Sugar Body Scrub; 2) Rose Water DIY – moisturizes your skin and gives it a nice glow; also spritz on your pillow for a relaxed sleep; 3) Mint Sugar Scrub.
Okay, you’ve come to the end of this post, great stuff buddy! I felt like congratulations were in order after reading almost 2.000 words haha… Anyways, these were some of the basic acts of self-care I’m focused on right now, and I really hope these will be as helpful and rewarding to you as they were to me. Also, what are some of the self-care tips you swear by lately? Care to share some in comments? It would be super appreciated!
