Expressing yourself in a creative way and doing it more often is life changing! Head on below to find out how it benefited me & how it definitely can change your life too!
I’ve always considered myself fairly creative. When I was a kid, my oldest friend Mara and I would get together, with our barbies and we would “design” and sew clothes for the dolls… Which later on turned into the two of us just getting together, without the barbies, and drawing dresses, skirts, you know, like them fashion designers do haha. It feels a lot like I always knew tho, even though at times I doubted that, that I wanna make stuff, create things myself. My interests changed with time, what was once dresses and clothes and stuff was changed with a desire to design interiors, then it was to write poems, books, and stuff. Then that turned into making cards and stuff, and on and on it went. And it always felt so good even thinking about doing that, let alone actually doing it.
However, looking back I’ve realized that there were times I wasn’t doing anything creative, for like months, which I also now am realizing it’s been alarming for someone like me haha. But honest to heart tho, not doing anything creative for so long did me no good, in fact, while it definitely wasn’t the source of all of my troubles, it sure as hell contributed a lot to me feeling unfulfilled, a little bit lost, and all of them other junk feels. Now, of course, I’m not saying that it’s the ultimate cure for all the troubles, diseases, challenges or whatever bad s*it people are dealing with. It’s not, but it does come in a package with oh so many benefits!
Obviously, the least I can do is share with you guys how I think doing something creative benefited me and why you should totally consider getting creative yourself much more often. So, let’s dive into this!
Why You should try to get Creative (much) more often.
1. Doing something creative is super relaxing and definitely can relieve you from stress. Almost like sex. Almost.
When I’m focused on making something, whether painting, molding clay, making a card or whatever, and no matter if it’s something easy or complicated, it hardly ever fails to calm me. I just think about how to make that something, how to bring it to life exactly like I imagined it, and so there’s really no room for negative thoughts. All those shitty things that bugged me are no more. And as someone whose mind really wanders, and often to not exactly bright and cheery places, focusing on expressing myself creatively, in any way, sure helps!
And no matter how hard can it seem to draw those eyes without them looking weird and all, or how complicated it seems to sew your own dress, or knit a sweater, it’s nothing compared to whatever thing that’s been stressing you out and robbing you from sleep at night. Getting creative should be fun! There’s literally no pressure, you don’t have a gun to your head or your boss to pressure you… Or your boss holding a gun to your head and pressuring you… You can just leave it if you don’t like where it’s going at that moment, no one’s gonna accuse you that you are a quitter (and if someone does, t’hell with them) and then come back to it the next time and nail it! Getting creative is something fun that you’re simply doing for yourself.
And, even it’s, like, your career, I’ll bet you didn’t choose doing something creative as a profession for the money or whatnot, you did it cause it’s fun and you love it, and cause you yourself are creative! So, no problem there. Just remember why you started.
2. It doesn’t even have to be something complicated or hard or whatever. The simple creative wins go such a long way!
You don’t have to, I don’t know, design a tree house for grownups and then build it, or sew a red-carpet-approved dress. No one says it has to be something big. In fact, I’d recommend, especially if you haven’t done something creative in a long time, to start with something simpler, something that you’ll definitely succeed, and it wouldn’t take that much time. So it won’t disappoint you and discourage you, on the contrary, it will get you excited and motivated to do something else sooner!
And it can be anything, I mean you can even recreate some of your favorite recipes and/or maybe serve it in a well-thought, nicer and new way. It will make you feel so, so good knowing that you put some effort into something, came up with some idea, and realized it. I’ve listed some really simple ideas for your starting creative endeavors just below.
1. This pom pom wall garland is super easy, even if you have to make the pom poms yourself (there’s a tutorial in this post for that too)!
2. The handpainted mugs my friend Maria and I made look soo pretty but are super simple to make. You don’t have to draw something complicated for it to look great and make you happy!
3. You can also get creative with treating yourself real nice. To get the idea as to how to do that, here’s a homemade Argan Oil Sugar Scrub recipe.
4. These paper bags are super easy to make, and just as super useful!
5. Make a nice patterned wall clock with paper & cork! You literally can’t make a mistake with this guy! You can draw whatever you like, paint it, or simply use something already drawn/patterned! Whatever makes you happy.
3. Getting creative frequently helps you master focus. In a super fun way!
Bringing an idea to life, finding a way to express your thoughts and emotions creatively, it’s a process. It requires your 100% attention, and it occupies your mind, leaving it with no chance for it to wander where it shouldn’t. In fact, kinda like meditation, it’s a pretty great exercise for your brain and you to learn how to point your attention where it’s needed most at that moment. And it’s super fun, even if you (think you’re) not that much into expressing yourself creatively, or DIY or whatever. There are tons of ways for you to be creative on your own terms and desires. Just allow yourself to do that.
4. Being creative is about being open-minded and free!
This is super important! Creativity is not about doing something right, it’s about creating something you imagined, saw, heard, touched, felt, or experienced… So, it’s important to always remember this – there’s no right or wrong way to be creative and express yourself, it’s just something you do (just don’t get creative in hurting anyone!). Sometimes, actually, more often, it may even take several different tries, approaches for you to finally get where you wanna get with it. Even if the thing completely blows on the first try (or few first), and believe me it will happen! Haha. But it probably also took you like at least 7 times of swearing to the holy toilet that you won’t ever drink that much, or never ever again, before you learned what your acceptable limit was, so you can totally get through the “this thing blows” situation too.
And once you start doing it more frequently, you’re gonna feel much freer with your creative endeavors, and you’ll have fun little reminders around, ones that you yourself created, that you can f*cking do pretty darn great things! So, it’s freeing and it boosts the confidence!
It took me days to find the best way to make the neon sign… I started with the wrong wire, it was too thick and it didn’t go well. So, a few hours wasted. Then I got the rope, but I had to figure out how to connect some of the letters, and what I made was not something universal, like say the word Love or I don’t know.. So there wasn’t an exact tutorial.. Then I tried several different types of glue to glue the neon rope to the wire successfully. It was frustrating at times, but I’m familiar with the process of creating, and so I just sucked it up and found the way to make it. Is it perfect now, once it’s done? Noooo. Does it look so good that people think I actually bought it? Nooo. Do I love it tho? Hells to the yeah!
5. You were born creative af!
There’s literally no kid that’s not creative! None. Think about it… Every child, no exceptions, every child draws like all over the place. There’s a pen, a crayon, whatever, and then there’s the wall, the table, a piece of paper, the floor… The kid doesn’t care, it just wants to have fun with it. “Look, mom, a house”. It’s not a house! It’s barely something, but the kid knows that that’s not the freaking point! Those were its emotions, its thoughts, perceptions and so short stuff just found a way to express those and nailed it!
The cave fellas, the cave fellas drew in the caves… And some of those drawings were noooot good haha! But seriously tho, many of those cave drawings really weren’t exactly accurate to the originals, or symmetrical or whatnot, they only kinda resembled the actual things. But that wasn’t and still isn’t the point! It’s what was happening to those people, how they lived, what they experienced, and so they wanted to express that, interpret it in their own way, to leave a mark so others would know that they were here too. Us human dudes man, we’re creative by nature! It’s why we survived so, so many years for crying out loud! So, don’t be a wuss (sorry, tough love!) and leave a mark! Express yourself!
My staars this is a looong post haha! But I want to believe that it was encouraging for you to get creaative! I honestly could go on, but it’s startin’ to feel like I’m talking to myself, and I mean I’m doing that on my own time anyways… So now we could actually sparkle up a nice double sided little talk! How often do you get creative? Do you feel like it’s doing great things for you too? Share your feels on exploring and expressing your creativity in comments, I’d love to hear what you think!
Also, feel free to PIN THIS, I’ll be thankful af! <3
